Oak Ridge became one of the three primary sites of the Manhattan Project, alongside Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Hanford, Washington.
Several major facilities were constructed:
- Y-12 National Security Complex, where electromagnetic separation was used to enrich uranium.
- K-25, once the world's largest building under one roof, which used gaseous diffusion to enrich uranium.
- X-10 Graphite Reactor, the world's first continuously operating nuclear reactor, where scientists developed techniques for producing plutonium and advanced nuclear research.
The enriched uranium produced at Oak Ridge was used in Little Boy, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. The bombing, followed by the bombing of Nagasaki three days later, contributed to Japan's surrender and the end of World War II.
The legacy of these events remains complex and continues to inspire discussions about science, ethics, war, and peace.
