Oak Ridge's scientific journey began in 1942 when the United States government established the city as part of the Manhattan Project. The mission was unlike anything the world had ever attempted: harnessing the power of the atom.
Thousands of scientists, engineers, mathematicians, military personnel, and skilled workers came together with one goal—to solve scientific problems that many believed were impossible.
Although much of their work remained classified for decades, the discoveries made in Oak Ridge transformed physics, engineering, chemistry, materials science, and computing.
The laboratories and facilities built during wartime became the foundation for decades of scientific advancement that continues today.
