The Secret City Is Born
Construction moved at an astonishing pace. Within months, thousands of workers were building roads, homes, schools, laboratories, factories, and utilities around the clock.
The city officially became known simply as Site X. It did not appear on maps, and its mailing address was often listed only as:

Oak Ridge, Tennessee
Residents lived under strict security measures. Identification badges were required at all times, and many employees knew only a small part of the work they were performing. The phrase "What you see here, what you do here, what you hear here, when you leave here, let it stay here" became a guiding principle for daily life.
At its peak during the war, Oak Ridge's population grew to more than 75,000 residents, making it one of Tennessee's largest cities almost overnight.
