Life Behind the Gates
Life in Oak Ridge during the war was unlike anywhere else.
Residents came from every corner of the United States, bringing together scientists, engineers, skilled tradespeople, military personnel, and support workers.
Many people had no idea what their jobs contributed to. Workers operated machinery, processed materials, or maintained equipment without knowing the larger purpose of their tasks. Security was so strict that even spouses often did not discuss their work with one another.
Despite the secrecy, Oak Ridge quickly developed into a thriving community with schools, churches, theaters, shopping centers, recreation facilities, and neighborhoods designed to support thousands of families.
